Non-Standard Diamond Grinding Wheels: Verifying Critical Dimensions After Delivery
Neueste Unternehmensnachrichten über Non-Standard Diamond Grinding Wheels: Verifying Critical Dimensions After Delivery

For a standard flat wheel, incoming inspection is simple: outside diameter, overall thickness and bore size tell you most of what you need to know, because those three dimensions decide whether the wheel mounts correctly and runs true. Non-standard diamond grinding wheels follow a very different logic. Once a wheel is profiled, stepped, slotted or built on a custom base, the dimensions that actually govern grinding results are no longer visible at a glance — and a wheel that slides onto the spindle without complaint can still be the wrong wheel.

Why "It Fits the Spindle" Is Not a Quality Check

Mounting dimensions only confirm that the wheel can be fixed to the machine. They say nothing about the profile that will be transferred to the workpiece. On a non-standard diamond wheel, the working layer is the tool: its width, thickness and position define the grinding allowance, the form accuracy and the surface finish of every part produced. A step height that is off by a few tenths of a millimetre, or a working layer placed on the wrong end face, produces scrap from the first component onward — and because the wheel physically fits, the error is easy to miss until parts start failing inspection.

The Dimensions That Must Be Checked Against the Drawing

For structurally complex wheels, the following dimensions should be verified against the confirmed drawing or approved sample on arrival:

No. Dimension Why It Matters
1Working layer widthControls the contact area and the width of the ground form
2Working layer thicknessDetermines usable tool life and achievable depth of cut
3Step heightSets the reference plane for form grinding and shoulder clearance
4Base thicknessAffects stiffness, deflection under load and total stack height on the spindle
5Taper / bevel angleDefines profile accuracy on angled grinding operations
6Arc / radius positionLocates the radius relative to the reference face for profile grinding
7Slot width and depthMust match the mating feature in the fixture or workpiece
8Working layer end faceConfirms which side carries the abrasive segment
9Locating holes and mounting featuresEnsures repeatable, concentric and correctly oriented mounting

Practical Inspection Advice

  • Always work from the confirmed drawing. Verbal agreements and sketches are not sufficient references for non-standard geometry.
  • Measure before mounting. Once a wheel is on the machine, minor profile deviations are almost impossible to detect without a test cut.
  • Use the right instruments. Callipers for width and thickness, micrometers for base and layer thickness, height gauges or a profile projector for steps, angles and arc positions.
  • Check orientation, not only size. Confirming that the working layer sits on the specified end face prevents mounting the wheel in reverse.
  • Record the numbers. Keeping measured values with the drawing creates a traceable record for every custom wheel delivered.

A Checklist for Custom Wheel Deliveries

  1. Open the original drawing or approved sample and confirm the revision number.
  2. Verify the wheel type, grit, concentration and bond marking on the label.
  3. Measure outside diameter, overall thickness and bore as basic mounting dimensions.
  4. Measure working layer width and thickness at several points around the circumference.
  5. Check step height, base thickness, taper angle and arc position against the drawing.
  6. Check slot width, slot depth and any additional locating features.
  7. Confirm the working layer is on the specified end face and that locating holes match the fixture.
  8. If any dimension is outside tolerance, stop and contact the supplier before any trial grinding.

For complex non-standard wheels, dimension verification is not bureaucracy — it is the cheapest quality control available. A ten-minute check with a calliper and a height gauge costs far less than a batch of scrapped workpieces or a damaged spindle. Suppliers of custom diamond and CBN wheels should always ship the drawing revision with the goods, and our technical team is ready to support customers with dimension confirmation, tolerance review and application advice for both standard flat wheels and fully customised profiles.
